The Engineer

Sang-hoon Ahn

Repair engineer at the Martin Guitar Official Service Center in Korea — one of the few service centers in Asia certified by Martin’s headquarters in Nazareth, Pennsylvania — responsible for diagnosis, repair and owner education.

The Korean Martin Official Service Center is operated by KY Trading (Kyungeun Trading Co., founded 1987), Martin’s official importer for Korea, under certification from Martin headquarters. Located in Dongtan, Gyeonggi-do, the center was built to factory standards with its own spray booth, drying room and machine room, and works alongside Martin’s factory repair team on both warranty and non-warranty repairs.

As the center’s manager, Sang-hoon Ahn leads the diagnosis and repair of every instrument that comes through the door. In September 2025 he took part in customer-service training at the Martin factory in Nazareth, learning the standards and methods of the factory repair team first-hand, and that same year he presented the center to Martin’s executive chairman, C.F. Martin IV, during his visit to Korea.

His work continues beyond the bench. On the Martin Guitar Korea YouTube channel and partner channels such as Acoustic Jun and InStation TV, he has explained humidity care, string storage, hide glue and Martin’s repair philosophy to players. ‘Explain why before you fix it’ is the attitude that brings players to him.

This site is not Martin’s official website; it is a place to show how one repair engineer works and to keep a record of that work. Standing on Martin’s 190-year history, his role is to help players in Korea keep their instruments healthy for a long time.

Philosophy

Working philosophy

01

Do No Harm

The principle Chris Martin IV emphasised when visiting the Korean center. Doing no harm to the instrument is where every repair starts; irreversible work is the last option.

02

Explanation first

Work begins only after the player understands the cause: humidity, structure or playing habits. Telling them apart is the heart of diagnosis.

03

Factory standards

The same standards, materials and adhesives as Martin’s factory repair team — applied to non-warranty work exactly as to warranty work.

04

Prevention is the best repair

45–55% relative humidity, seasonal storage, string care. Teaching care before repair has long been the center’s policy.
